Open-source is steeds meer een begrip aan het worden. Veel gebruikers komen er stilaan achter dat Windows niet het enige besturingssysteem is. Linux kent een grote opgang. Verschillende ministeries willen overschakelen op Open Office. En in het kielzog hiervan vindt de eindgebruiker ook steeds meer zijn toegang tot andere open-source programma's.
Zijn deze programma's echter wel zo goed als men beweert? Zijn ze gemakkelijk aan te passen? Zou een bedrijf er iets mee kunnen? Kunnen ze aangepast worden voor een embedded omgeving?
Bij Philips Leuven - en meer bepaald de Philips Applied Technologies afdeling - stelde men zich die vragen ook, maar dan specifiek toegespitst op het dvd–gebied. Mijn thesis draaide dan ook rond de evaluatie van enkele dvd–pakketten en de mogelijkheden om deze te porten naar een platform met een Xscale Processor en een Trimedia Processor.
Het ging er dan ook vooral om na te gaan in welke mate dit mogelijk was en een vaststelling te maken van wat de eventuele problemen zouden kunnen zijn.
Mijn thesis kan dan ook in drie grote delen worden onderverdeeld. Eerst moest ik nagaan welke pakketten er zoal te krijgen waren om daarna een selectie te maken. Zo vond ik o.a. Xine, Ogle, VideoLan en Mplayer. Na een studie van deze pakketten koos ik uiteindelijk voor Xine, omdat dit het handigste leek voor mijn doel.
Na die selectie maakte ik een nieuwe plugin, die na verschillende tussenstappen in staat was om te communiceren met de Trimedia. Zo gebeurt het decoderen op de Trimedia. Dit is wat uiteindelijk toch de bedoeling was aangezien de Trimedia daar zeer geschikt voor is.
Als laatste stap werd Xine met de nieuwe plugin overgezet op een testomgeving, om zo een laatste keer na te gaan welke problemen er dan nog zouden kunnen ontstaan.
Zodoende kon ik een goed overzicht maken van welke problemen er zich zoal kunnen voordoen, wanneer men een open-source pakket probeert aan te passen aan een meer commerciële omgeving.
Abstract (English)
Open-source is becoming well known. Many users start to find out that Windows isn't the only operating system in the world. Linux knows a great growth. Some ministries want to switch to Open Office. And in the track of these, the average users finds more often his way to other open-source programs.
But are these programs as good as one says they are? Are the easy to adjust to specific needs? Could a company do something with it? Can they be adjusted for an embedded environment?
At Philips Leuven – and to be more specific the Philips Applied Technologies department – the same questions were asked, but then more applied to the dvd-area. Because of that my thesis had everything to do with the evaluation of some dvd-packets and the possibility to port these to a platform with a Xscale Processor and a Trimedia Processor.
It was all about examining in what way this would be possible and to make a determination of the possible problems that could occur.
My thesis could be parted in three big parts. First there was the examination of which packets there were. So, I could make a selection. I found amongst other smaller packets Xine, Ogle, VideoLan and Mplayer. After a study of these packets, I decided to choose for Xine because this seemed the most handy and suitable for my purpose.
After that selection, I made a new plugin which was capable of communication with the Trimedia after some intermediate stages. So the decodation happens on the Trimedia. This was the intention right from the start because the Trimedia is really suited to do this.
As last stage Xine with the new plugin was transferred to a new test environment to test one last time what problems could occur by doing something like that.
