INSTICC is a non-profit organization that organizes international conferences. Due to the complexity, it takes a lot of effort and intense planning. The INSTICC employees have to work together closely and have to be sure everything is in order, so the conference can continue without any hitches. On the other hand, their clients should be able to compose a schedule of the sessions they would like to attend, based on their own interests or professional background.
Our project consists of two parts. The first part is creating a management system to plan conferences. Instead of using Excel sheets to visualize the sessions and their tasks in tables; we use the Telerik RadControls to visualize the same, but also adding extra functionality. The user can create a new conference, based on a saved template (basic structure) of a previous conference. Furthermore, the user can add and remove tasks, add staff members who are available and have the appropriate skill to perform the tasks, and much more.
On the other hand, the participants of the conference are going to compose their schedule of which sessions they would like to attend or workshops they want to take part in. Currently they select everything by hand, which increases the risk they choose overlapping sessions without knowing. To make this process of choosing a lot easier INSTICC started a project called the "myProgram Advisor". Its purpose is to look at the profile of the participants, trying to understand what their areas of interests are, what scientific field they are active in and analyze this data. Analyzing this data is not that easy and therefore we will try to use artificial intelligence to determine what a good schedule would be for the participant. The "myProgram Advisor" is an experimental project because it is impossible to say if the people are going to like the advised program or not. It is possible that, when INSTICC enrolls this program and with some feedback from the participants of the conference, they are able to fine tune the artificial intelligence that this program is using into a more viable solution.
Both applications are written in ASP.NET and C#, making use of Visual Studio 2008. They also
use a database server, powered by SQL Server 2005, for storing and retrieving data. We make use of Telerik RadControls, which are highly customizable, to display the information to the user.
