The internship takes place in pLAB, a laboratory at the Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences. The client, Mr Hannu Kähkölä, is a lecturer at the school and wants to use the result as a basis to teach. The purpose of the internship is to develop a prototype of a system that monitors people's attendance using RFID technology.
To register traffic, an NFC Encoder (ToP Tunniste) is connected to a computer running a C++ console application that is constantly listening for new tags within the range of the device. People can sign themselves in by swiping their RFID tag by the device. The C++ application then stores a record of the arrival time and location to a MySQL database. To sign out, the tag just needs to be swiped by the device again, which will cause the application to log the attendance using arrival and departure time as well as the sign in location in the database.
In addition, there should be a PHP website that allows authorized personnel to see all data in the database and thus monitor attendance. This will be done using the PHP Zend Framework and the 960 Grid System.
The development environment is Windows 7, using Visual Studio 2008, Netbeans 6.9 and MySQL Workbench 5.2. For local PHP development, WampServer 2.1e is used. There is also an NFC-enabled Nokia cell phone, which can be used instead of a normal RFID tag.
